1. Where can I be fingerprinted?

We provide fingerprint services on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1000 - 1130 hrs., walk-ins. 

2. Does my organization need a permit to hold a raffle?

Yes. You may obtain a permit from the California Attorney Generals Office.

3. Who is responsible for reporting an accident to the insurance company?

There is no legal requirement for a driver to report to their insurance company that they have been involved in a traffic accident. The normal procedure is for driver involved to inform their insurance company of the accident. Your insurance agent will then guide you through the process of filing a claim.

The accident report will have insurance information for all the parties involved. In the event the other driver does not notify their insurance company, you or your agent can forward a copy of the report to the insurance company.

4. Can I request a uniform patch from the police department?

No. The uniform patches issued by our department remains the property of the police department. Used patches are returned for replacement. When an employee leaves the department they must return the all issued equipment and items, to include uniform patches.

Penal Code Section 538(d), subsection (c) Any person who willfully wears, exhibits, or uses, or who willfully makes, sells, loans, gives, or transfers to another, any badge, insignia, emblem, device, or any label, certificate, card, or writing, which falsely purports to be authorized for the use of one who by law is given the authority of a peace officer, or which so resembles the authorized badge, insignia, emblem, device, label, certificate, card, or writing of a peace officer as would deceive an ordinary reasonable person into believing that it is authorized for the use of one who by law is given the authority of a peace officer, is guilty of a misdemeanor, except that any person who makes or sells any badge under the circumstances described in this subdivision is subject to a fine not to exceed $15,000.

5. What can I do about cars and trucks parked in front of my house?

Streets are considered public parking, therefore, vehicles parked on a city street are allowed as long as they have current and valid registration. Vehicle code limits parking to 72 hours, then the vehicle must be moved. If the vehicle is not moved after this time it will be considered abandoned and can be towed. This also includes the vehicles of the property owner.

6. What should I do if I see someone spraying graffiti or committing some other minor violation?

If you see vandalism or another crime in progress and also see the people committing the crime you can call 911. Give the dispatcher the location, the suspect information/description and the type of tool used.

If you find a crime has been committed, and have no suspects in the area, you can call the non-emergency phone number 831-385-8311. You may also leave an anonymous crime tip online.

7. How do I report a crime or report a traffic accident?

A non-injury accident only involves an exchange of license information, insurance information, names and phone numbers. If the vehicles are blocking the roadway and unable to be moved, call the non-emergency phone number at 831-385-8311.

An injury accident can be called in on 911. Give the location of the accident, number of vehicles involved and any additional information you can provide.

You can also download the Accident Report form and once completed return it to the Police Department during normal business hours. A Police Officer will take the information and contact you. Please be sure to leave a phone number or email address were the officer can contact you. Download the report form.

8. How do I see my arrest record?

If you need to see a copy of your arrest record you need to go to the Sheriff's Department in the county in which you were arrested.

9. If I call 911, how does the dispatcher know where we live?

The phone company provides your location information to the police department, much like caller ID is provided in a private residence. The dispatcher may ask you to confirm you location information because sometimes the information provided is incorrect.

If you call 911 and then hang up the phone, the dispatcher will try to call your phone number. If there is no answer, they will send a Police Officer to your home.

10. My vehicle was towed because the drive did not have a license. What do I do now?

The California Vehicle Code requires that any person driving a vehicle in public must be a licensed driver. The driver's license must be current and issued by the State of California or another State within the United States. If a vehicle is stopped and the driver does not have a license, the Vehicle Code requires a 30 day storage.

The vehicle can only be release after 30 days. The owner of the vehicle must show current registration, insurance and a valid driver's license to the Police Department, who will then issue a vehicle release form. There is a $100 fee for this form. The Police Department does not set the fees for towing or storage. These fees are set by the individual tow company.

You may also request to have a Vehicle Impound Hearing to try and get the vehicle released earlier. Either obtain the form from the Greenfield Police Department or download it once completed, return it to the Greenfield Police Department during normal business hours. 11. I keep getting annoying "hang-up" phone calls. Nothing is ever said and it's driving me crazy. What can I do?

If you keep getting annoying "hang-up" phone calls, you can contact your local phone company to get information about caller ID and call blocking to block out the annoying phone calls.

12. What can I do about speeding vehicles on my street?

To report a speeding vehicle in your neighborhood, get the vehicle license plate number and a vehicle description. If the problem is not a single vehicle, but an ongoing problem with multiple vehicles, you can call the non-emergency phone number at 831-385-8311 and request extra patrol checks in that area.

13. In my neighborhood, sometimes I see things that are out of place or unusual or people who are suspicious Can you tell me what I should do?

If you see something suspicious or unusual in your neighborhood you can contact the Greenfield Police Department at 831-385-8311, the Non-Emergency Dispatch number.

You can also report suspicious circumstances anonymously online.

14. Should I install a burglar alarm in my house?

The decision to install a burglar alarm is up to you. If you do choose to Install one, several factors have to be considered. When the alarm is activated you will need to send someone to meet with the officers. The officers can only check the perimeter of the building and will need a key holder to check the interior.

15. How do I get a copy of a crime report?

17. How do I check on the status of my crime investigation?

To check on the status of your crime report, you can contact police records at 831-674-5111, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. - 5 pm. If you need to contact the officer that took the report, you can leave a message on the Records Division voice mail.

18. If I have been involved in a collision and want a copy of the police report, what should I do?

19. How do I make a citizen's complaint or report outstanding performance by an officer or employee?

To make a citizens complaint or report outstanding service by an officer, you need to come into the Police Department. You can meet with the watch commander and fill out the proper forms. Remember to leave your phone number, email or some other way that we may contact you to ask question and to let you know about the outcome. View the Police Department contact information.

20. How do I apply for a permit?

The department issues the following types of permits:
- Dance
- Parade
- Sound amplification (not permitted in residential areas)
- Special Event
- Vendor's license

21. What does the Police Department do to accommodate people who do not speak English?

The Police Department has a policy regarding limited English proficiency. This policy includes surveying the needs of our local community. Approximately 90% of the residents of our city our Hispanic. Spanish is spoken by the majority of residents. We also have a portion of the community who are Indigenous Mexicans, who speak local dialects from the State of Oaxaca. This includes Trique, Mixteco Baja, Mixteco Central, and Zapotecas.

We have volunteer translators for the Indigenous languages. The personnel assigned to the front desk are bi-lingual in Spanish and English. We have also established minimum proficiency in Spanish for all Police Officers. The officers who do not speak Spanish are issued training material for basic Spanish Skills.

We have extensive information in English and Spanish available at the front desk, to include Citizen Complaint Forms in English and Spanish. The department is also committed to hiring personnel who are bi-lingual and bi-cultural, to better represent the members of our community.
