My car was impounded, what do I do?
If your vehicle was impounded because it was abandoned, a traffic hazard or the driver was arrested, you can obtain a release from the Police Department. There is a $100 charge for all vehicle release forms.

If your vehicle was impounded for expired registration, all DMV fees must be paid, prior to release. Please bring your DMV paperwork and receipt.

If your vehicle was impounded because it was being driven by an unlicensed driver or someone with a suspended driver's license, it will be impounded for 30-days, per California Vehicle Code section 14602.6. In order to get a vehicle release form you must:
- Someone with a valid driver's license must also be present.
- The registered owner must be present with valid identification.
- You must present a valid registration or receipt of fees paid.
- You must show proof of current insurance for the vehicle.
