Greenfield Seeking Police Chief

The City of Greenfield (Pop. approximately 19,000), located on Highway 101 in the heart of the Salinas Valley, is seeking a seasoned Public Safety professional to serve as the new Chief of Police.  Our previous Chief left to take on a bigger challenge as the new Chief of Police for the City of Salinas, California. The Interim Chief and Interim Commander are retired and not candidates for this position.   The new Chief will administer a budget of over $3,100,000 and lead a staff of 23 sworn personnel and 5 non-sworn as well as several part-time employees. The new Police Department facility is state of the art and undergoing further enhancements.

The City (with an annual growth rate of 3.5%) as well as the Department, are in a growth mode. The new Chief will have full administrative support and the opportunity to select the second in command and grow the Department as a leader in law enforcement.

The new Chief should have solid administrative skills coupled with a “hands on” leadership style, sense of humor, and proven ability to maintain positive community relationships with the business community, the schools, local clergy, advocacy groups, youth program providers and other local and regional law enforcement agencies. The ability to interact with multicultural and multilingual constituencies is essential. Bilingual ability (Spanish) is highly desirable.  Since officers in the department tend to be younger the Chief should also be a law enforcement “skill builder” and mentor who values continued training and professional development opportunities for staff.  In addition, the new Chief should be someone who is service-oriented, proactive, innovative, honest and responsive. The City Council and City Administration have proactively worked to bring the new Medical Cannabis business to our community.  As the City is in the position of benefiting from gradually increasing Medical Cannabis revenues, law enforcement support of and oversight experience in dealing with the industry from the law enforcement side is highly desirable.

A Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a related field is required.  Successful completion of the POST Command College Program, FBI National Academy, or similarly accredited Police Executive Development course is also desired.  The salary for the Chief of Police is $165,000.  Benefit package includes CalPERS retirement, 457 Deferred Compensation match up to $100.00 per month, health, vision and dental coverage, 14 paid holidays and 80 hours of annual management leave in addition to vacation and sick leave.  While the Chief is expected to be active in the community, residency is not a requirement but is desired. A City application is required. Apply by October 27, 2017.
